About this production

Valancy Stirling is twenty-nine, unmarried, and has never in her life said what she thinks. She lives in Deerwood under her mother and Cousin Stickles, is called "Doss" by relatives who treat the name as a joke, and escapes into an imaginary Blue Castle. Then a letter arrives from Dr. Trent telling her she has a year to live, and L. M. Montgomery's 1926 novel becomes something closer to a comedy of revolt: Valancy starts answering back at the family dinner table, walks out to keep house for the disreputable Roaring Abel Gay and his dying daughter Cissy, and proposes marriage to Barney Snaith, the outcast the whole clan has spent years gossiping about. The letter, it turns out, was a mistake. By then she has already built the life.

The book is unusual in Montgomery's work in two ways that matter to a production. It is one of her few novels written for adults, and it is the only one set entirely outside Prince Edward Island — Deerwood is drawn from Bala, Ontario, and the second half moves out to an island in Muskoka's Lake Mistawis. So it runs on two registers at once. The Stirling clan is pure ensemble comedy, a dozen aunts, uncles and cousins talking past each other in a room, and it only lands when Aunt Wellington's disapproval, Cousin Stickles's corrections, and Olive's effortless superiority are distinct people rather than one narrator doing voices. The Mistawis chapters are the opposite: quiet, weather and water, the sound of a place Valancy has never been allowed to want.

That contrast is what a full cast and a score are for. In this Midsummerr production every character carries their own AI-generated voice, so the Deerwood scenes play as an ensemble rather than a monologue, and the island chapters are scored and sound-designed to change the room around you when the book changes register. If you are weighing that treatment for a book of your own, our guide to whether your book needs a full cast covers when an ensemble earns its keep, and when to score a scene and when to leave it alone covers the other half. Montgomery's Anne of Avonlea is also available if you want to hear the same approach applied to her better-known work. The Blue Castle is in the public domain, and this production is free to stream in full.

FAQ

Is this audiobook AI-narrated?

Yes. Every voice in The Blue Castle is AI-generated and produced by Midsummerr, with an original score and sound design. AI narration is disclosed as such on retail platforms that require it.

How long is the audiobook?

About 7h 52m, running to the novel's final chapter.

Is The Blue Castle like Anne of Green Gables?

Not especially. It is one of the few novels Montgomery wrote for adults, its heroine is twenty-nine rather than a child, and it is her only book set entirely outside Prince Edward Island. Readers who come to it from Anne usually notice the sharper comedy about family and the darker setup. If you want the Anne books instead, Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea are both free to stream.
