About this production

Anne Shirley is sixteen and back at Green Gables as the Avonlea schoolmistress — and L. M. Montgomery's 1909 sequel is, even more than the first book, a novel made of talk. It opens on an August afternoon with a Jersey cow loose in the new neighbour's oats, an irate Mr. Harrison bouncing over the fence, and Anne selling the animal in haste to a passing buyer — the wrong animal, as she learns two chapters later, in a house where the parrot swears at visitors. It fills the house with Marilla's newly adopted twins, the relentless Davy and the tidy Dora. It puts Anne through "A Jonah Day," the chapter where she loses her temper with a pupil and cries about it afterwards, and it ends with a wedding at the Stone House and Anne leaving, two weeks later, for Redmond College. Almost none of that arrives as description. It arrives as people talking over each other.

That is what a full cast is for. In this Midsummerr production every character gets a distinct AI-generated voice, so Davy's endless questions, Mr. Harrison's bluntness, Rachel Lynde's certainty, Miss Lavendar's romantic drift, and Paul Irving's daydreaming don't collapse into one narrator's register — they play as an ensemble. Avonlea is scored and sound-designed around them: an original score that tracks the book's swing from farce to quiet, and the outdoor world of Prince Edward Island underneath the scenes rather than described in them.

The result is 9h 41m covering the complete thirty-chapter novel, from "An Irate Neighbor" to "A Wedding at the Stone House," with opening and end credits. It follows our production of the first book — you can hear how the ensemble handles the characters who carry over in the Anne of Green Gables spotlight, and if you're producing a series of your own, keeping a cast consistent across books is its own production problem worth planning for. Anne of Avonlea is in the public domain, and this production is free to stream in full.
