About this production

Jane Eyre is a first-person novel, and that is exactly what makes it interesting to dramatize. Charlotte Brontë gives the whole book to Jane — her judgement, her temper, her retrospective narration turning to address you directly. A full cast could easily trample that. The job here was the opposite: keep Jane's voice at the centre and let everyone else arrive inside it, the way people arrive inside a memory. Rochester interrupts her. St. John Rivers argues with her. Bertha Mason is heard long before she is explained.

The novel also moves through five distinct places, and each one asks for a different sound. Gateshead is a cold house and a locked red-room. Lowood is an institution — bells, cold water, and the typhus epidemic that empties the school while Helen Burns is dying of consumption. Thornfield is the Gothic centre of the book, where a laugh in the attic goes unexplained for hundreds of pages and a wedding stops mid-sentence. Then the moors, where Jane walks out with nothing, and finally Ferndean. Casting and score follow that geography rather than flattening it, so the middle of the book genuinely sounds like a different world from the beginning. If you want the reasoning behind decisions like these, our gothic and horror production guide covers how dread is built in audio, and how many character voices an audiobook needs covers the casting side.

The production runs 18h 31m across all 38 chapters, ending where the novel ends — Brontë's "Reader, I married him" and the conclusion at Ferndean. It is free to listen to in full, which makes it a fair test: this is a long Victorian novel, not a showreel excerpt, so you can hear how a dramatized treatment holds up across eighteen hours before deciding whether it suits your own book.
