Chapter 37, at 28m 55s, is the engagement breaking into the open, Fanny Dashwood's hysterics arriving second-hand through Mrs. Jennings, and Elinor at last telling Marianne how long she has known. In print you can hold that ambiguity open indefinitely. In performance someone has to choose a delivery line by line without resolving it — which is the hardest thing a two-hander can be asked to do, and the clearest test of whether a dramatized edition is doing more than handing out voices.
